| Small Press Month, now in its 11th year, is a nationwide promotion highlighting the valuable work produced by independent publishers.
|
An annual celebration of the independent spirit of small publishers, Small Press Month is an effort to showcase the diverse, unique, and often most significant voices being published today. This year's slogan is Celebrate Great Writing. As Alice Walker, who was recently published by the independent publisher The New Press , and who is the face of this year's Small Press Month poster, stated: "As water to flowers, independent publishing to democracy." Her statement, which is quoted on this year's SPM poster, underlines the importance of independent publishing. Harvest Shadows Publications couldn't concur more. In the face of industry consolidation, in a time where a book might not be considered for publication unless it's sure to sell in the millions or multiple tens of thousands, the small press is an important factor in free thought and not yielding to the lowest common denominator or the most commercial prospect. Small Press Month is co-sponsored by the Small Press Center and PMA, The Independent Book Publishers Association and CLMP (The Council of Literary Magazine and Presses), and other publishing organizations. |
