Harvest Shadows Publications is proud to support rider Shawn Fields-Berry in the 2007 Ride FAR charity event next week.
Shawn Fields-Berry is one of our favorite riders.
In 2005, just weeks away from the Red Ribbon Ride, Shawn was struck by a car while training for the ride. At the time he was hit, Shawn was the leading fundraiser for the Ride. He suffered a fractured shoulder, broken ribs, and a punctured lung. Needless to say, he was unable to ride that year, but he returned in 2006 and successfully completed the ride. This year Shawn is riding in the Ride FAR 10, the Ride For AIDS Resources, September 5-9, 2007. In just 5 short days, the riders will ride 500 miles. Yes, 5 days/500 miles. The route is impressive: Wednesday, September 5 Provincetown, MA to Sandwich, MA
Thursday, September 6 Sandwich, MA to Little Compton, RI
Friday, September 7 Little Compton, RI to Kingston, MA Saturday, September 8 Kingston, MA to Oxford, MA Sunday, September 9 Oxford, MA to Stowe, MA The donations go to various projects, as follows:
- 1/3 goes to the Pediatric Call to Action Project. Ride FAR has provided over $135,000 to help reduce mother-to-child transmission of HIV and expand care and treatment at model sites in South Africa and Zimbabwe. The success at these model sites has garnered government grants and additional funding. Ride FAR 10 funds will be earmarked for sites in the Democratic Republic of Congo where private funding is most urgently needed.
- 1/3 goes to CHAMP's Prevention Justice Partnership Program, enabling groups across the country to collectively plan, build, launch, and sustain winnable HIV prevention campaigns.
- 1/3 goes to 25 Community-based HIV/AIDS Service Organizations. One third of the money each rider raises stays local. Riders designate Ride FAR beneficiaries serving their own communities, often forming partnerships which last year round.
- 0/3 (nothing) goes to administration, overhead, advertising, mailings, food, lodging, and so on.
Thirty five participants (twenty-five riders and ten road crew ranging in age from 15 to 61) have set their sights on raising $200,000.
